3 Days of Eric Carle!

Even though this week was supposed to be part of a spring break...I am glad it wasn't! I had so much fun with the kiddos...introducing them to an amazing author and illustrator. This theme was not on our list of weekly themes and we were allowed to explore any topic we wanted...I am so glad I chose him! Take a look and see why!

Monday!

This sweet girl got to share what she and Gumby did! They had a blast!

To introduce Eric Carle we began with a video of who he is.

We began with one of Eric Carle's most beloved stories...

Our craft was a new way of creating art...using balloons!

The balloons were an exciting touch!

Perfect work!

Perfect job boys!

Our hungry caterpillars are eating through a nice green leaf. This lacing activity is simple and perfect for strengthening their hands and eye-hand coordination.

Next we read this fun story. This will be perfect for teaching the concepts of time as the kiddos grow.
After we read this the kiddos got to make their grouchiest faces...and we discussed what makes them grouchy! These will be in your kiddos portfolios...so you will have to wait and see what they came up with...and I promise you their responses will make you giggle! Not to mention...CHECK OUT THESE FACES!

A bit of math next...counting out 10 pom-poms to make our hungry caterpillar. I did not have the kiddos glue them down so they could show you at home. Here you can check their 1-1 correspondence and verbal counting skills.

I did this activity for number counting and 1-1 correspondence. But you can do it with color patterns too!

 Tuesday!
We began our day with Little Cloud

We then painted clouds using cotton balls...This week we were also working on the letter Cc!

After the kiddos painted they told me what their clouds looked like.

Our independent activity for the day was tearing paper to make the letter C look like the hungry caterpillar. I know...I know I have said this a million times...tearing paper is an important fine motor skill! Ask yourself..."Can my child tear small pieces unassisted?" If not...have them practice!!!

You can see the different skill levels of paper tearing here.

We have been working hard on making our name. Here we are using wiki sticks (a bendable wax) to make our names. Making our names does NOT just have to be a pencil paper activity. You can do ANYTHING! Noodles, rice, paper tearing, sand, sand paper, screen writing, stamps, magnetic letters...SEE!!!
One big thing we are working on is proper pencil grip. In this picture she does have an  ideal grip (most kiddos at this age are learning and trying to figure it out)...but it can be easily fixed...check the next picture.

Place a penny in the last 2 fingers (ring and pinky finger) as they hold on to the penny it forces their sweet hands to hold the pencil correctly! Great job sweet girl!!

The fun science of the week. A Cloud in a Jar.
Mason jars filled with water...then the kiddos add shaving cream.

This looks like there is a cloud (shaving cream) and the water is the sky.
The kiddos then add food coloring mixed with water to color the sky! They had a blast!!

When they were done they drew pictures of what they saw.

Great teamwork my sweet friends!!

A job well done! And his face says it all...he loved this experiment!

Wednesday!
We started the day with the Very Busy Spider!

After we read it we were very busy friends and made web of own!

Next we made the busy spider! We used Popsicle sticks to make a rectangle.

We then used ribbon to make a web any way we wanted. I loved the creativity!

They had to count out the number of legs they needed.

Super great work boys!

Our Eric Carle masterpiece. We used tissue paper art to make our first initial of our name.

My busy little bees!

pulling each piece of tissue paper apart and laying them down one by one is a great finger exercise!

Look for these special pieces of work soon! It is my gift to you!

They laced their own webs.

Sweet friends working on their tracing and pencil grip (using a marker...fat pencils/markers make best for beginner writers!)

Hungry caterpillar tracing...

Great job sweet buddy!

Letter match

Sequencing and retelling of the hungry caterpillar. This is a great activity for any book...it develops comprehension!
