Ocean!

What a cool week! We explored ocean life, the letter O, and the number 1.
Monday:
A week with Gumby...

He had a blast with this pretty girl! Wow...has he done some fun things!

A house for Hermit Crab by Eric Carle. What a way to introduce the ocean theme. Hermit had a plain house and he used things in the ocean to decorate his shell. We also learned that hermit crabs outgrow their shells and they need to find new ones to fit in.

Then we decorated our own shells

and used our sweet hands to make the crab itself.

Awesome work girls!

O is for an orange...orange. Let's paint!

Great job sweet buddies. Remember to encourage them at home to hold their writing utensil at the base (instead of at the top) to give them more control in their writing/painting.

Letter match!
http://www.pinterest.com/pin/84794405458572505/

tricky...they had to locate the letter in this bin and match it up. The first day I did this (picture shown) proved to be a bit challenging. So on day 2 I modified it with less letters so they would be easier for their little eyes to locate. This made them feel more successful!

Team work...block building...and of course knocking them over!
We read this book and learned some cool information about some ocean life!

This is the actual size of a squid's eye...it is the size of our head!!

The size of a saltwater crocodile's head..

Just look at the size of those great white sharks teeth! His face says it all, "Yikes!"

A humpback whale is the biggest creature that has ever lived...even larger than the biggest recorded dinosaur!
This jellyfish is the longest creature.
We then did a sort...which animals live in the ocean and what does not.

Where does this one go?? She knows!
Great work guys!

Let's explore so ocean life!

Tuesday:
We opened the day by reading Swimmy by Leo Lionni

They created their own Swimmy illustration by painting bubble wrap that I cut out in the shape of a fish.

We then helped them press the bubble wrap down on the paper...

We can't forget Swimmy himself...the black eye!

Awesome work kiddos!

Working on the letter O...They added Cherrio's...the kicker....they had to use plastic tweezers to pick up the Cherrios! Now that is hard work! But they did awesome!!

If you could be 1 ocean creature and only 1 what would you be? You will have to wait to see these answers! I am putting them in their portfolios!

Why does an octopus spray ink? Let's find out!

drop it into water...

each child got to add some black paint (mixed with water) using a syringe.

What do we notice?

We can't see the octopus! It sprays ink to protect themselves against predators in the ocean that may try and have them for a snack!

Math time! 1 octopus has 8 legs...let's cut its legs out!

Not only are they using  great fine motor skills to cut the yarn...they are also using 1-1 correspondence to count the strings of yarn they are cutting.

Awesome!

Perfect work sweet buddy!
Outside! Play...Play...Play! Finally we get to go outside and enjoy our friends and fresh air!

Dr. Seuss!

Another short week...boo! I am ready for spring that is for sure! We had a fun filled day with Dr. Seuss and read tons of fun books! The kiddos got a kick out of Fox in Socks!

Sweet buddy got to share about his experience with Gumby.

Check out all of our sill socks!
Great job sweet buddy!

We made our own Thing 1 and Thing 2 guys!

Y is for yarn! Not only did they have fun learning about different things that start with the letter Y...but...what does Mrs. Laura like about this actvity!?! Can you guess??

Yup!!! You guessed it! Cutting! They cut small pieces of yarn and glued them onto the Y! We worked on proper scissor holding and positioning of the object we are cutting.

They were so focused! But they did get to do something much more fun afterwards!

Yo-Yo's start with Y! Let's figure these guys out!

Down it goes...but who can make it come up? lol! This was tricky...but they had a blast!!

This sweet face says it all! Paint! This was their independent activity for the day! They tried to follow the color pattern of Dr. Seuss's hat!

Great job sweet girl!
Letter hunt for Yy and dot that Y!

A fun game of BINGO when they finished! Thank you to Mrs. Tracey Dykes for assisting us today!

One fish...two fish...red fish...oh wait...no Blue fish! lol! We sorted colored goldfish and then graphed them!
If you do this at home... I would start with only about 5 goldfish! I had Mrs. Tracey start with 10 and it was a bit much! Sorting was easy...graphing them was bad...but counting was a bit confusing!

More about those silly fish! In each fish bowl the kiddos had to read the number and put the correct amount of goldfish in each bowl. This was also kind of tricky for a few! This would be a great activity to do with them at home!!

Great 1-1 counting sweet buddy!

Play-Doh time! This is one of our favorite activities!

Our silly hat picture! Thank you Dr. Seuss for being such a great inspiration to our kiddos!!
