Ocean...and my school of fish!

We had a ton of fun this week learning about ocean creatures! We loved learning that octopuses (You know I had to google how we say/write the plural of octopus...I wasn't sure octopuses sounded like a real word! LOL!) have 8 legs and ink to protect themselves! We even got to compare our heads to an actual size Giant Squid eye!
Thursday:
Another fun week with "Gone with Gumby"
These kiddos are amazing at sharing what they did!
We began our week with reading this amazing story! We then of course had to make a a house for our hermit crab (and what better way...by using our sweet hands)

What great artists I have in my room! And a huge thanks to a special mama that stayed and helped me finish these masterpieces!

I loved this activity for a few reasons...1. painting is always fun! 2. learning is fun 3. Giving directions is fun!
I gave simple directions and checked to see if they were able to follow them. I said, "paint the orange, orange, and color the leaves green with the crayon." These kiddos were able to do this entirely on their own!

And just check out this amazing pencil grip! My kiddos have been working so hard to write their names independently! If you notice that the kiddos are writing their names backwards...that is ok! Just Use a highlighter...write their first letter where you want it...and have them trace it and continue on. If they are struggling with correctly forming some letters...do the same thing. It is easiest for them if you use a yellow highlighter or marker!

If you could be any animal in the ocean what would it be??

"O" is for Cherri-O's. Now you know me!! Picking up these O's is tough work and a great way to strengthen those special fingers and hands!

Playing with all sorts of fun ocean things!

Ocean creature or Not an ocean creature? That is the question!

What a fun way to think about land animals and animals that live in the ocean. We talked about salt water and breathing under water!

We predicted what would come out of the capsules!

So much fun!

This was another fun story! We read about the animals that lived in the ocean or salt water and were able to see exactly how big they were!
Salt Water Crocodile's snout

Great White Shark's teeth

Giant Squid's eye

Friday:
Exploring seashells!

This is such a sweet story...it is about teamwork and friendship. Tons of little red fish work together to make up 1 giant fish...and Swimmy the little black fish is the eye. They do this so they can explore the ocean without being eaten...they successfully trick many other large sea creatures.

We made these using bubble wrap and our thumbprints.
Happy Birthday to this kind and sweet big boy!! He brought in yummy doughnuts for all his friends!

And what isn't more appetizing during snack than a dead shark in a jar!?!? Thanks Mrs. Tracy for sharing with us!

O is for owl!

Octopuses have 8 legs! We had to count out 8 pieces of yarn...and show Mrs. Laura 1:1 counting! We then gave our octopus legs!

Super job smart buddy!

My sweet boys at home let me bring in their super cool "Kinetic Sand" so our kiddos at school could check it out and pretend they were at the beach!

What do octopuses do when they are scared? They ink of course! They do this so their predators can't see them and they can scurry away!

We then watched a cool video to see an octopus in "real" action

What a fun week learning about the ocean and the creatures that live in it! Next week is "Pond Week"...more fun and learning will continue!
