community helpers

Helpers in our community are everywhere! We talked about some of our favorite jobs and jobs that our parents do (this was a fun survey that will be added to their portfolios).
For our letter work we worked on the letter C. We found names of kiddos in our room that have C in their names. We also did our weekly letter hunt.

For our number sense we worked on the number 9. I discussed 10 frames and we filled in 9 of the 10 squares for the kiddos could see the value. We also played a dot roll game. They rolled the cube and found that number on a set of teeth and covered it with a button. This really helped with number identification.
They worked on understanding traffic lights. We played stop and go. They also tore paper to make a stop light (this is a great fine motor skill...the smaller they tear the stronger their fingers are).

On Thursday we did a lot of talking about how to take care of our teeth. We took a survey on who has been to the dentist and who brushed their teeth this morning. They sorted healthy foods for our teeth and foods to only eat sometimes. Next week we have a dentist visiting us! I read one of my favorite teeth books, “What if I had Animal Teeth?” This was a fun read talking about various animals types of teeth!
We had so much fun choosing a favorite job and creating a headband. They got a community helper book of their own...this is a fun read discussing different types of jobs and what they entail.

During independent time the kiddos practiced brushing “sugar bugs” off of a set of teeth. They also used a fun Play-Doh dentist kit and pretended they were dentist...they drilled and made new teeth. I had a bucket of community helper hats...it was so fun watching them be creative and use their imaginations.

This week I am starting “Adventures with Gumpy or Pokey”  Each kiddo will have Gumpy or Pokey for a week. They can have fun with them and create a fun picture page that they will share the following Thursday.

Finally, we began a new Bible theme this month. We have learned that we are to love others the way God loves us.

*Next Friday is our Valentine’s Day Celebration. You are welcome to send Valentine’s in for your kiddo to pass out...please only write who it is from! They will make Valentine’s Day bags here at school...no need to send in a box! Thanks in advance! *We have 14 kiddos now!
