Space...All about the Sun and Moon this week!

Space was out of this world! We had a blast with so many cool activities and crafts! We learned a lot as well. This week was all about Space (sun and moon) , the letter /Uu/, and the number 7. Explore our blog and see what we have been up to! I am going to try something new this week and add links that will take you to some of the cool crafts or activities we have done...just in case you want to try them at home or are looking for ways to extend their learning. Keeping a connection to home and school is so important!

Moon Lesson--make art lesson.
I caught wind that some kiddos have been singing this poem! I have put it into their poetry folders...but here it is again. Ask them to show you the motions as they sing it! It goes to the tune of "I'm a Little Teapot."

So squishy!

He rocked this project!
Our first gone with Gumby! She had such a blast with him...and was able to share with everyone all the great things they did! What a super speaker!

Here the kiddos worked on using fat chalk to make the letter U...they were then allowed to use cool star stickers to trace it again.

Peeling these stickers is harder than it looks! These tiny fingers work hard to peel each tiny sticker! Awesome work buddy!

Next we worked on lacing a few constellations. This activity touches so many important skills for these little guys. Eye-hand coordination and fine motor skills.

You can do something as simple as this by using index cards, hole puncher, and shoe laces. Just hole punch a card in any pattern and allow them to use the lace to string it through following your pattern!

The infamous moon dough. A huge hit in our room...at least for me and the kiddos (not so much for Mrs. Trina). Here is the link if you want to make it at home. It is easy, fun, fast, and MESSY!

More dumping of the flour...

Lots of stirring!

and baby oil!

We got to share with our friends how we thought it felt! We even compared it to play dough!
They couldn't get enough of it!

Whoa...this feels cool!!!

Minds-In-Motion!!
Nice throw!

Great jumping!

Mr. Pogo man!

Can your kiddo put their shoes on all by themselves? This is a great task...and a great way to check their fine motor progress! Over the year they have made leaps and bounds with this!

Our number 7...Let's make the big dipper. I was excited to find that the Big Dipper has 7 stars. I have told the kiddos you can see this awesome constellation all year long...and you would be happy to show it to them in the night sky!

What was so cool about this project was that they had to count out their own marshmallows and then pretzel sticks. BUT...with the pretzel sticks they had to problem solve to make the sticks fit. It was way cool watching them watch one another to make it work...finally finding they needed to carefully break them.

She was so great at breaking those pretzels!

After much waiting...and believe me...they didn't let me forget! It was crystal time! They were able to use magnifying glasses to view the crystals. I LOVE how they held them right to their eyes...We used comparing words to compare the different colors of crystals and how they looked different. Mrs. Trina did the blue and I did the red. Mrs. Trina followed the directions...I did not...I added more Epson Salt which made larger crystals (I have never been one to play by the rules! lol!

Tuesday we began by learning about the moon. We learned that it also gets light from the sun, it is a rock with craters, and so much more.
We made our own craters.

And then with a mixture of flour and glue we painted it on the moon to make it have a rocky texture.

Such great work!

3-2-1 Blast off! Making rockets with our name was challenging for many reasons! 1. ordering the letters in the right order 2. making them read correctly going from top to bottom rather than left to right 3. making sure all of our letters were positioned correctly (not backwards or upside down).

Hard at work! Once they were in order we made them look like rockets. They had to find a triangle shape in a big bin of shapes for the top and add stickers as if it was soaring through space.

Can't get more perfect than that!

Making the number 7 several different ways. We used wiki sticks, magnadoodles, and baggies full of shaving cream. You can do these things at home....other ways to do it are allowing them to use noodles, chalk, yarn, screen writing...etc. Anything other than the traditional "paper-pencil" is fun for them!

Sweet buddy making the 7 in shaving cream! "Across the sky and down from Heaven...that is the way we make our 7!"

Even though his 7 is backwards...this is completely normal! Letter/number reversal is acceptable until mid-year of first grade! So do not worry about that!!

Our 7 Box sheet!

Let's roll! The kiddos got to roll the dot cube...and count the dots...they then matched it to the index card.

She's got it!

Great counting!

Good friends helping each other out!

Great 1-1 correspondence!
