Ice and Snowmen...

What a fun week learning about snowflakes, snowmen, and cold, cold ice! We had an awesome time exploring with ice and making crystals! We also worked on the letter Ii and the number 6.

Thursday:

After our morning message...we began our week with one of my most favorite Snowmen stories. I LOVE Nancy Carlson!! In this story it talks of magic...the power of being kind to one another...and an important lesson of practicing hard to achieve a goal. All of that in one sweet little picture book!
We had a 2 day project of making our 5 little snowmen. I am sure after this year you will have quite the collection of hand prints...but these priceless little fingers don't stay small long! Such a treasure!!!

Ice art! I had frozen these at home and brought them in for the kids to paint. This was their independent station for the day. It was so cool to watch them work together and share the paint. Masterpieces in so many ways!

With Mrs. Trina they worked on the letter Ii and then went on their letter hunt.

After the letter hunt we always have an organized game...this week Candyland! A fun way to work on colors and counting...as well as taking turns.

We continued with the number 6. This week the number 6 and snowflakes really matched up. Did you know that the most common snowflake is a "star" shaped flake that has 6 sides? We did lots of counting this week.

What was so cool about this activity....I laid out the snowflakes and they counted them out completely on their own! Their 1:1 correspondence is just amazing! And of course the fine motor aspect of picking up these tiny flakes was awesome!

This police officer rocked his counting!

We revisited The Mitten, By Jan Brett. After we checked the pictures and recalled what happened we made a mitten to sequence the story...this way they can share it at home with you!

We read this book and learned how snowflakes are made in the sky. We especially loved the "real" photos of the pictures that were in the story. We learned that there are many types of snowflakes.

We spent some time counting the points on the star snowflakes and were able to make connections back to our number 6!

Science time! Let's make ice crystals. We added water, Epson Salt and food coloring. They were to sit  in the refrigerator over night....and then on Friday we were going to check them....Well...you know me and my "awesome" memory. I forgot. A big fat boo on me! We will take a look next week....or you could make this at home! :)

Continuing with science. What happens when ice melts...and what can make it melt faster? SALT!!!

Of course it is not a complete day without lots of free play!

Friday:

Another super author! We talked about how we would create our very own snowmen...what types of materials could we add?
Snowmen...with snowballs (cotton balls of course)

Perfect job sweet friend! Another way you could do this is using plastic tweezers or chopsticks...and allowing your kiddos to pick them up that way...giving it a fine motor twist!

such great buddies!

Cotton ball masterpieces!

A Huge Happy Birthday to this sweet as a donut girl!

An ice treasure hunt! Below the ice is hidden toys! What other way to get them out...then to hammer them out!

fun times...great memories!

Getting their beading on!

This snowflake has six sides to bead.

It doesn't get much better than this.

This was the highlight of my week. I gave the kiddos the letters of their name...totally out of order. I told them to make their name and give their snowman a body. Much to my surprise the majority kiddos did this completely unassisted!!!

They are on our bulletin board in the hallway...stop by and take a look! They rocked this activity and I had to display it!

I wrote out our poem of the week and the kiddos went on a Ii letter hunt. They found all of the Ii's!! This is in their poetry folders...take a look...and let them show you all the letter Ii's!
*I only wrote up 1/2 the poem...so you can do the second half at home!

Our bible verse for the week...God will wash our sins away as white as snow! We know we aren't always perfect...neither are snowflakes...But we have God to forgive us!

Day 2 of our 5 little snowmen...we got to decorate these ourselves.

Finishing up on the mitten. I gave a child an animal from the story.

The parachute was our mitten...and as we retold the story that animal got to get into our "mitten"

Jumping for Joy and for an awesome week!

The first book I am listing does not have words...it is just pictures. We learned that we could still tell a story by only checking the pictures (this in the future will be a great reading strategy). We then read the story book. This book did have words. We compared our words to the words in the story. A fun way to read books. Try this at home when reading to your kiddo. Have your kiddo look at the picture and tell you what they think it is saying...then read the words on the page and compare the 2! A fun way to make reading even more interesting!

As you know there is never enough time to get to everything. If you have a moment please check this book out. It is about a man named "Snowflake Bentley" He is the first person to ever photograph snowflakes. It tells his story and love of the snow. The pictures in this book are amazing!!!
